Motorola’s Droid X Sells Out on Day One

While Apple has been busy playing damage control on the antenna issues with its own hot-selling superphone, Motorola has been clearing some headway of its own with the launch of the Droid X. The successor to the original Droid went on sale July 15 and has already sold out, despite early reassurance from Verizon that there would more than enough phones to go around.

Although Verizon hasn’t released any official numbers, the phone is out of stock at almost all retail locations and no longer available online. Customers just placing orders now may have to wait until July 23 to receive the Droid X, according to Verizon’s Web site.

Despite the opportunity to blame the cloud of negative press around the iPhone 4 for the surge of interest in the Droid X, Verizon representatives dodged the issue. “People make decisions about what phone they want for all kinds of reasons,” Verizon spokesperson Brenda Rainey told Newsfactor in response to the Apple question. “When people walk in the door at Verizon, they’ve chosen a network. I can’t comment on how things like that influence their decisions. You have to ask the customers.
”
Despite the apparent mainstream popularity of the Droid X, it has also caught flack in more underground circles for its locked-down architecture, which will make it more difficult for hackers to load their own versions of Android onto it. Motorola has denied reports that the phone will completely stop functioning – or brick – when tinkered with, but confirmed that the eFuse technology inside will prevent it from running different versions of Android not intended for it.
