Pros: The odd design and MOTOBLUR software provide users with a satisfying experience using a smartphone.
Cons: Running on Android 1.5, speed is not a quality this phone possesses.
The Verdict: If originality and multimedia is your main focus, the Backflip is a worthy option for a smartphone
Most smartphones have the same design with a touchscreen, slider or candy bar shape. But what about trying something different? The Motorola Backflip explores a peculiar design option and succeeds. For a side-by-side comparison and objective reviews, visit the smartphone page.
Design:
Any touchscreen phone with a QWERTY keyboard that can do a backflip is worth mentioning. When closed, the keyboard is located on the back of the phone making it look like your average flip phone. However, when swung open, the keyboard sits directly beneath the screen. The swinging keyboard may make the user worried about durability of the phone, but the phone is solid and feels up for constant use. The keyboard will type only if it is beneath the display and not if closed and placed in your pocket. Not only does this Motorola device have a unique flip design, it also features a touch pad, called the backtrack, for viewing and selecting menu items.
Multimedia:
For such a nontraditional phone design, the camera and video options are fairly basic. The Backflip features a 5MP (Mega-pixel) auto-focus camera with LED flash and 4X digital zoom. Video capture is also available at a rate of 24fps (frames per second). The phone features basic and advanced editing tools, so no matter where you are, you can turn your pictures into high quality.
A standout feature on the Backflip is MOTOBLUR. This software allows you to keep track of contacts by choosing pictures of the individuals from a social network you specify. It also provides for quick responses to social networks by flipping through messages and updates on the phone without having to log in and out of the applications. MOTOBLUR offers access for photo sharing on MySpace, Photobucket, Picasa and Facebook. It also allows you to customize your home screen with the software’s Happenings, Status and Messaging widgets, and customizable news widgets to keep you updated on your current events.
Memory/Storage:
One drawback to the Backflip is the installed 1.5 Android system. This less-advanced system does not allow the phone to go as fast it should, but the option to upgrade to the current Android 2.1 is available. The phone also is not short of memory with a 2GB pre-installed memory. And with the option to upgrade to 32GB, there is a lot of music, videos, pictures and contacts you can fill this phone with.
Additional Features:
Offering the basic features found in most smartphones, the Motorola Backflip provides users with Wi-Fi, Accelerometer and an E-compass. A built-in GPS is also installed, which allows you to find the phone wherever it may be, so the hours spent searching for your phone in the couch cushions or looking under your car seat are gone.
Summary:
As a nontraditional, good-looking phone, the Motorola Backflip gives users a unique phone with basic phone features. It isn’t the quickest and definitely not the most advanced smartphone on the market. However, the multimedia features and the MOTOBLUR software contribute to the peculiar characteristics of the phone and may just make you do backflips yourself.
